Dr. Kalliopi Chourmouziadou

Architect Engineer - Mandated Professor

Architect Engineer (AUTh), Master and PhD in Architectural and Acoustic Design (SSoA)

Kalliopi Chourmouziadou is a graduate (2000) of the Department of Architectural Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), Her postgraduate studies (2001-2002) at The Sheffield School of Architecture (SSoA), The University of Sheffield, U.K. focused on the architectural and acoustic design of performance spaces, their relationship with the landscape, emphasising on the materiality and their functional and aesthetic attributes. She was awarded with a Doctor of Philosophy Award (2007) from The University of Sheffield, U.K., with a thesis entitled ‘Ancient and contemporary use of open-air theatres: evolution and acoustic effect of scenery design’. During her PhD studies she received a Fee-waiver from SSoA, the Incentive Scheme Award and the Learned Societies Fund, while she attended the international ‘Intensive Course on the Study and Performance of Ancient Greek Drama’, of the European Network of the Study and Documentation of Ancient Greek Drama, co-organised by the Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

The subject of the PhD thesis involves the architectural evolution of spaces built for ancient Greek drama performances, landscape formations and layouts, the revival of ancient drama, its conventions and its contemporary interpretations in relation to body movement in space. It focuses on ephemeral structures (scenery) and their contribution to the overall experience through the architectural design, the materiality and their effect on the acoustic environment. The methodology was based on theoretical approaches, architectural-structural resolution, digital representation, acoustic measurement and simulation, subjective evaluation and parametric design.

While in the UK, she participated in the 1st year Undergraduate Design Studio and the Master of Advanced Architectural Studies Module ‘Environment Simulation and Building Analysis’ of The University of Sheffield, as well as the five-day workshop ‘Material Matters: Materiality and the Senses’ at the University of East London. Since 2007 she has participated in architectural design studios at the Departments of Architectural Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Democritus University of Thrace. From 2015 to 2022 she was a contract lecturer at the BA(Hons) Programme of the School of Architecture of the Metropolitan College and the University of East London (RIBA part 2), teaching at the Architectural Investigation and Resolution studios and at the Technical, Environmental and Professional Studies. Since 2015 she is a member of the Associated Academic Staff of the Master's Course ‘Acoustic Design and Digital Sound’ of the School of Applied Arts and Sustainable Design of the Hellenic Open University, teaching courses and supervising master theses. Since 2021 she is an Academic Scholar of the Department of Interior Architecture, School of Design Sciences, International Hellenic University, teaching theoretical courses and design-synthesis studios of Structural Art ΕΑ102, ΕΑ206, ΕΑ303 και ΕΑ502 and ΕΑ615 – Acoustics of Spaces.

Her research interests include the application of contemporary theoretical approaches in architectural and urban design, in synthesis’ investigations, in the collaboration of architecture with other scientific fields and in the dialogue of architectural-urban and acoustic design, both in terms of specialised buildings, as well as in the external acoustic environment (soundscape). She has edited scientific books, has written chapters in collective volumes of international publishers (Springer, Nova Science Publishers, Routledge), has published articles in scientific journals and proceedings of international and national conferences. As a member of the scientific and organising committee of conferences and special sessions, he has organised workshops and think-tanks in architecture, visual and applied arts and has been invited for lectures by institutes, organisations and universities in Greece and abroad. She was the co-leader of the group "WG4 - Creating and Designing" and a member of the management committee of the European COST Action "Soundscape of European Cities and Landscapes", TD0408, 2008-2013, she is a member of the board of directors of the Hellenic Institute of Acoustics (HEL.IN.A ) and member of international bodies and institutes of architecture and acoustics (UIA, IOA, EAA).

Since 2000 she has participated in a large number of architectural, urban and environmental planning projects, in architectural competitions, in projects of great complexity but also of all levels of scale – restoration, reuse and regeneration projects of industrial complexes, commercial and office spaces,, residential buildings, hotels, hostels – boarding schools and schools, indoor and outdoor spaces, architectural acoustics. In 2010 she co-founded the architectural office arch6-architecture studio based in Thessaloniki, with awards and distinctions in architectural competitions - 'Rainscape Stories', 'Urban Shell', 'The city is my learning space: Thessaloniki Sensescapes'-, with several architectural project publications and exhibition participations.
